October 17-23, 2005
Hello everyone!!!
Hope you are all well once again. I am writing on timethis week! It is Sunday evening and for once (!!) I am home for a change, soI thought I'd send my weekly email.
This week has (as always) been full of drama and fun, happiness andcraziness! From Earthquakes and Typhoons to sickness and parties!
Last Monday 17th was any normal day - except for a hell of a lot of waitingin lines etc - applied for a bank account, joined the uni gym and picked upmy "Alien Card" - legal residential registration card.
Only had one class so managed to catch up on a lot of uni work (which Idesperately had to do!!)
On Tuesday 18th I had a usual day at uni - you must all be noticing how"normal" my days are becoming! When I am at uni, there is not much new to report - even though I love my classes, it's not nice to talk about study!
Watched the news last Tuesday night and saw that a major typhoon system was heading towards Tokyo - this being just 2 days after the earthwquake. Overnight, however, the typhoon turned sharply to the North and missed Tokyo which was a great relief!
On Wednesday I met up with Kazuya and we spent a quiet day together. Wewatched "Japanese Story" - actually an Aussie movie starring Toni Colette - if anyone hasn't seen it yet, you MUST rent out the video or DVD and take a look! One of my favourite movies!
On Wednesday night we went out to dinner together - a brand new Okonomiyaki restaurant had opened up near my house, so we went there to sample the food - nothing short of delicious!
Came back home and while we were both watching t.v, there was anotherearthquake. Compared to Sunday's one it was stronger and continued for one minute. Quite scary. We watched the immediate news report on the telly - it was a 6.5 in the Pacific Ocean - didn't generate any Tsunami warningshowever!!
Thursday 20th I again had uni, with a few tests too. Went well. Met up withmy friend Emerald and had dinner together then fashionably went to Starbucks and did some reading!! So Japanese hey!!
To follow up on our Japaneseness we then went to an English Pub for adrink!!! haha
Friday was a day off for me - I usually have classes from 9-6pm, but it wasthe University's Birthday so we all got the day off!! Since I had joined thegym on Monday, I went and tried out the facilities. Similar to what I hadbeen used to at Fitness First back in Ausralia, but much smaller. It was alittle while since I'd formally done exercise, so I was a little tiredafter. I then went and met some Japanese friends and we played tennis together for 2 hours - not a match or anything - one of the guys who came was incredibly good, so we decided that (because none of us could beat him) we would just hit back and forth - nothing formal!!
I hadn't played tennis for a while too, so I enjoyed getting back into it...
We then went out for dinner and then again to an all-you-can-drink bar -very Japanese-style. I met a number of new Japanese people; I really enjoyengaging in conversation with people, especially in another language.
On Saturday I met up with another Japanese friend, Ryosuke, and we wentwindow shopping for 6 hours at the now-famous Harajuku! Enjoyed sushi for lunch, hot chocolate for afternoon tea and Japanese yakitori for dinner!! Was good to simply speak Japanese ALL DAY ONLY, considering I always call my other English speaking friends during uni time etc.
Felt quite sick though, particularly because I had expended so much energy the day before at the gym and playing tennis. Came down with the flu (mild flu) last night.
But that only temporarily stopped me!
Today I upheld my promise to attend a farewell/birthday party for twoseparate people who live here at the house with me. We all cooked a plate of food and then opened some wine and beer and chatted most of the afternoon.
I have much homework to do, so have come back upstairs from the party and will tackle that now....
I have not as yet received any students to teach English to - I applied fora position a few weeks back over the internet. Although, one of the girls atthe party today wants me to coach her in English (and she is willing to payme) - she also has a few Japanese friends whom she will refer me to.
I am also looking at applying for the cleaning position at the house here -a contract of 2 hours per day (everyday) cleaning for FREE RENT!!!!!!! Very entising! I would do ANYTHING for free rent!
Anyways, hope everyone had a great week - take care and keep in touch..
